Chateau Royal de Cognac Wedding – Historic French Château in the Heart of Cognac

Chateau Royal de Cognac Wedding

“Ok, can you tell me the chateau address, please?” I asked.
There was a silence on the other end of the line. I immediately felt I’d asked something a bit strange.
“There is only one chateau… LE Château, madame,” came the reply in French...

At the beginning of my wedding photogaphy journey, I wasn’t completely confident in my French. So I simply asked for the venue address. Only later did I realise how naive my question sounded for locals – a bit like asking: “Could you give me the address of the Eiffel Tower?”

Cognac is a relatively small town, known all over the world because it is the birthplace of cognac itself. Only the brandy produced in this region can carry that name. On your first visit, you can’t miss the Chateau Royal de Cognac - a famous historic fortress sitting on the banks of the Charente river, right in the centre of town.

You walk through the tall metal gates and past the dark stone walls, and you’re greeted by a sweet, slightly woody smell that tells you - you’re somewhere special. In the courtyard, the clock and the Chateau Royal de Cognac logo look down over blackened cobbles and walls – the "la part des anges", or angels’ share. As the eau‑de‑vie evaporates during ageing, it leaves these dark marks on the stone, a visible sign of the town’s pride in its cognac.

If you’re dreaming of a luxurious French wedding in a truly historic setting, this article is here to show you what getting married at the Chateau Royal de Cognac really feels like.

Is This Your French Wedding Chateau?

These stone walls keep so much history. First, it served as a fortress to stop Normand invasion in X century.

The French king, François I, was born here in 1494.
He later became one of France’s most important Renaissance kings, famous for inviting artists like Leonardo da Vinci to his court and helping to bring the Italian Renaissance style to France. The king who transformed France culturally and intellectually.
So saying your vows in the Chateau de Cognac feels like stepping into the place of history and art.
Since 1795 and till today, this is the Baron Otard Cognac House.

Where Your Ceremony and Reception Can Take Place?

The Chateau Royal de Cognac gives you several beautiful options for each part of your day.

Outdoor spaces

An open terrace overlooks the Charente river and town, a perfect spot for a relaxed cocktail as the sun sets.

Inside the main courtyard, you can welcome guests, surrounded by ancient fortress walls. They give shade from the sun and wind and create a dramatic backdrop for drinks or a symbolic ceremony.

Indoor spaces

Inside, elegant vaulted halls can host up to around 200 seated guests. There are two large rooms, you can use for different moments of the evening.

One works beautifully as your reception space for the dinner and speeches. The other can be turned into a dedicated dance floor.  Stone walls and high ceilings offer great acoustics for live music or a DJ.

Because the stone architecture is already so striking, you do not need heavy decor. Soft lighting in your chosen colours on the walls and arches will create a very atmospheric, romantic look. As you can view in the images above.

Some practical details

The Chateau Royal de Cognac works really well for a full wedding weekend.

Welcome drinks & tastings

The roof terrace can host up to 50 guests, making it ideal for an intimate cognac‑tasting evening the day before the wedding. You could plan a relaxed Friday night: tasting at the chateau, then dinner together in town. There are plenty of nearby restaurants.

Wedding day & brunch

Saturday becomes your main wedding day, with cocktail hour on the terrace or in the courtyard. Dinner served inside the historic halls. On Sunday, you can gather everyone again for a farewell brunch in the courtyard.

Dinner, catering and service

The reception spaces work well for seated banquets of about 70 to 200 guests. The chateau collaborates with selected catering partners, so you have strong options to choose from. Only experienced chefs work here.

Photos in the cognac cellars

If you would like couple photos in the cognac cellars, remember that flash is not allowed inside the “paradis”, where the oldest (most valuable) cognacs are stored. Your photographer will need to work with continuous light, such as a simple LED torch, to create atmospheric images. View my images above.
