Wedding Dress Travel to France

Wedding Dress Travel to France: Tips for Destination Brides

Planning a wedding in France means thinking about a thousand little details, and one of the most important is your wedding dress.

You’ve spent months searching, booked fittings between work calls, maybe even flown to another city to find “the one”.

Now comes the scary part: getting that wedding dress to France in perfect condition.

Your dream dress survived months of searching. Here's how to make sure it survives the flight too.

I’m Lana Dowling, a wedding and elopement photographer based between Cognac and Bordeaux, creating cinematic, emotional images across south‑west France. Whether you’re just starting to dream about an elopement in south‑west France or already know exactly where you want to say your vows, I’m here to share everything I’ve learned from a decade of photographing couples in chateaux, vineyards and by the Atlantic coast. So you can plan your day with confidence and feel completely at ease in front of the camera.

The Problem Nobody Warns You About Before the Flight

A recent bride from the USA wrote to me in a bit of a panic. She was so in love with her dress – layers of delicate fabric, long train, beautiful corset – but the idea of folding it into a suitcase for the flight to France made her feel sick.

If you’re driving to your venue, it’s simple: you hang your dress carefully in the car and you’re done. But most of my couples are flying. The dress is usually packed in a garment bag or suitcase, squeezed into the overhead lockers, and by the time you open it in your French gite or hotel… it’s creased, crushed and requres wedding dress steaming services.

You shouldn’t have to spend your wedding morning fighting with a travel steamer, worrying about burning lace or flattening tulle.

The problem: who looks after the dress?

What a Wedding Dress Specialist Actually Does?

Destination weddings have created a whole ecosystem of specialists: planners, content creators, floral designers – and now, wedding‑dress care experts. These are the people who quietly save the day.

A wedding dress specialist is someone who:

  • knows how to handle delicate fabrics and beading
  • has a professional steamer and the right products
  • can come to your accommodation the day before or on the wedding morning
  • can help you actually get into the dress without stress

Instead of your mum, sister or best friend trying to learn steaming techniques from YouTube at 7 a.m., you have someone calm and experienced whose only job is to make sure your wedding dress looks perfect.

Where to find a wedding dress specialist? In the places where they sell  - use a local bridal boutique.

Wedding Dress Steaming: How to Find a Local Bridal Boutique Near Your French Venue?

So how do you find this magical person when you’re travelling to a town you’ve never visited before?

The easiest way is to look for a local wedding‑dress boutique near your venue. Even if you didn’t buy your dress there, many boutiques in France are happy to:

  • steam and prepare your dress the day before
  • store it safely overnight if needed
  • help you put it on correctly on the wedding morning
  • do last‑minute fixes like loose buttons, small stitches or tape

Often this costs much less than you expect – a small fee compared to the peace of mind it brings (around 200€). And you’re putting your dress into the hands of people who work with wedding gowns every day.

If you’re getting married in south‑west France, you can:

  • search Google Maps for “robe de mariée” or “boutique mariage” near your venue
  • ask your photographer (hi, that’s me), planner or venue owner for recommendations
  • email the boutique a photo of your wedding dress and ask if they offer steaming or “préparation de la robe” services.

One Simple Step That Will Keep You Calm on Your Wedding Morning

You deserve to step into your wedding dress feeling calm, not worried about creases and fabric care instructions in another language. When a professional is taking care of your gown, your only job is to enjoy your morning – have breakfast, laugh with your friends, maybe pop some champagne.

Your mum, sister and best friends can be with you, rather than standing over a steamer, afraid they might burn the hem. And when you finally see yourself in the mirror, your wedding dress will look just as beautiful as it did in the boutique!

If you’re planning a wedding in France and feeling nervous about travelling with your wedding dress, start by finding a local bridal boutique near your venue and asking about steaming and dress‑care services.

It’s a small step that makes a huge difference to how relaxed – and how gorgeous – you’ll feel on your day.
