For couples dreaming of a destination wedding in France, Dordogne offers something wonderfully rare.

Known for its golden-stone villages, truffles, foie gras, chestnuts, duck specialities and peaceful river valleys, the Dordogne is made for slow, joyful celebrations. Your wedding may be the reason everyone travels to France, but your guests will find plenty to enjoy before and after the day itself: local markets, chateau visits, prehistoric caves, riverside lunches, canoe trips and long dinners under the warm Perigord evening sky.

Heather and David travelled from the US with their closest friends and family, arriving via Paris. Their day was elegant and relaxed. This is a beautiful example of how a small destination wedding in France can feel - an unforgettable long weekend with the people they love most.

For a couple planning a wedding in the Dordogne, Sarlat offers a wonderful contrast to a country-house or chateau celebration.

In short 30 min session, you can have images that feel unmistakably French: timeless stone streets, elegant architecture, cafe terraces and the atmosphere of a medieval town at golden hour.

Often described as an open-air museum, Sarlat is filled with beautifully preserved architecture from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its honey-coloured stone façades, narrow pedestrian lanes, carved wooden doors, hidden courtyards and old-world shopfronts create a truly cinematic setting. The town has even appeared in film productions “The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc” by Luc Besson.

Heather was especially drawn to having part of her wedding photography session in Sarlat-la-Caneda, one of the most photogenic towns in the Dordogne.

Be prepared.
The best wedding photographs might look spontaneous but there is calm experience and preparations hidden from public eyes. As a wedding photographer I want to be ready for anything, especially in a popular tourist destination such as Sarlat during summer.

The day before Heather and David’s wedding, I explored Sarlat-la-Caneda to plan the most beautiful and practical route. I looked for convenient parking, shaded streets, quiet corners and a simple walking path that would give us variety without asking the couple to spend too much time away from their guests.

You don’t want your bride and groom to walk back and forward.

I found elegant archways, textured stone walls, narrow lanes, old doors and small details. I could already imagine the couple's photos in my head. Having a route in mind meant we could make the most of our limited time on the wedding day.

On the wedding day, Heather and David exchanged vows at a lovely hotel near Sarlat, surrounded by their family and friends.

It was an exceptionally warm day, close to +40 C / +104F. Comfort always comes first, particularly when young children and elderly relatives are part of the celebration.

With a little girl and the bride’s 91-year-old grandmother among the guests, we decided to photograph the family groups indoors, where everyone could stay cool and comfortable.

This is an important consideration now for summer weddings in South-West France. Beautiful outdoor portraits are possible even in high heat, but your photographer and planner should think about shade, water, air-conditioned transport and a realistic timetable.
 

A flexible approach ensures the photographs remain enjoyable rather than becoming another source of stress.

After the ceremony, Heather and David travelled with me to Sarlat in the air-conditioned Land Rover. We parked just a few minutes from our first location, allowing the couple to arrive refreshed rather than overheated.

We spent around 40 minutes walking through the town, stopping at a carefully chosen selection of streets and architectural details. There was no need for a long or exhausting portrait session. The beauty of Sarlat did much of the work.

The result was a collection of images that felt romantic, editorial and authentically French. The couple had plenty of time to return to their guests and enjoy their wedding dinner.

If you are getting married near Sarlat-la-Caneda and would love similar photographs, you might find it useful to look at this route.  I marked the places where we took above pictures by green colour. In blue is a route I took to drive back to pick up the couple at the end of the photosession, so they didn't have to climb up the hill.

A planned route is never rigid. On a wedding day, a street may be busy, a shop may be closed, a delivery vehicle may appear at exactly the wrong moment, or a previously quiet square may suddenly fill with tourists.

Preparation means we always have alternatives nearby.

Rather than trying to photograph every famous corner of the town, I focus on creating a relaxed experience and choosing the places with the best light, atmosphere and space for the couple. Five or six stops are sufficient to capture the best couple portraits. 

A wedding in the Dordogne is ideal for couples who want their guests to experience France beyond the wedding venue.
 

You could plan a welcome dinner in a local restaurant, explore the Sarlat market, visit the Lascaux caves, take a canoe trip on the Dordogne River, discover nearby villages such as Beynac-et-Cazenac or La Roque-Gageac, or spend an afternoon tasting regional food and wine.

Whether you are planning an intimate elopement, a small family celebration or a multi-day chateau wedding, Dordogne combines French history, beautiful landscapes and genuine hospitality in a way few regions can.

Heather and David’s celebration was a perfect reminder that an intimate wedding does not need a huge guest list or an elaborate programme to feel extraordinary.

With the right setting, the people closest to you and enough time to enjoy the moment, a destination wedding in Dordogne can become one of the most meaningful adventures of your lives.
