This June I discovered another lovely French wedding venue in the Cognac region. Le Moulin de Chazotte sits about 20 minutes from the centre of Cognac, in quiet, green countryside. It is a family‑run watermill with stone buildings, a little stream, vines and open fields all around – a dream setting for a relaxed French wedding weekend in Charente.

Maddy and Harri brought around 60 guests from the UK for their wedding at Le Moulin de Chazotte. June worked perfectly: warm, sunny days but not too hot, so everyone could enjoy an outdoor ceremony and reception in comfort.

Le Moulin de Chazotte is one of those French wedding venues that feels cosy and spacious at the same time.
All day long you and your guests move from one space to another, so you never feel stuck in one spot.

The main house and gîtes offer plenty of bedrooms.

The couple and their friends can get ready without stepping on each other’s toes. On Maddy and Harri’s day, the bride got ready in the right wing with five friends, while the groom relaxed in the left wing with his own group and beers. Everyone had their own corner for hair, make‑up, music and a slow morning coffee.

All guests arrived together by bus, which kept things simple and fun. Welcome drinks waited on the lawn near the house. People spread out across the grass with glasses of Cremant, catching up and exploring the property.

When it was time for the ceremony, everyone walked to the garden at the back of the house.

The team had arranged a pretty seating area so guests could see the centre, where the groom stood waiting. The first look happened here, with the mill in the background and the sound of the little stream running beside them.

That soft water sound added a very romantic touch to the vows.

After the ceremony, guests walked up a small stone staircase and formed two lines outside the large wooden gates. The newlyweds passed through the middle while everyone threw petals, prepared by Laura, the wedding venue owner.

Next, everyone moved to the wooden outdoor bar.

Here the Crémant flowed and the wedding drinks turned into a relaxed garden party. Guests could wander between the bar, seating areas and lawn games. It never felt crowded. There was always a quiet place to sit, a corner to change a baby, or a shady spot to chat with a glass in hand.

As an experienced wedding photographer in Cognac, I pay attention to how people feel.

Some guests jump in front of the camera; others prefer to watch from the side. When I see guests start to suggest ideas for photos, that’s my favourite moment to join in and build on their energy.

At this wedding we created fun group shots, relaxed couple portraits and a few silly frames that everyone loved.

Dinner took place in the barn, beautifully decorated by Laura, a friendly owner and the planner at Le Moulin de Chazotte.

Throughout the day guests used the outdoor games area and different seating corners. Children played, adults talked, and the flow felt very natural. Later, the musicians started to play in their own little spot. A rug in front of them became the dance floor and slowly pulled everyone in.

As the sun dropped, we slipped away for golden‑hour photos in the nearby vineyards. It took only 15 minutes to do everything: walk there, take the couple portraits and walk back, so the couple did not miss much of the party.

The last part of the night took place under fairy lights, with an open‑fire area and plenty of dancing.

It felt like a romantic countryside festival rather than a traditional formal reception.
